Hope

Believing in my personal resurrection and heaven is fundamental to my Christian faith. Can I be confident? Well, personally I have stood by quite a number of people when they are dying. Those who have confidence in the resurrection and eternity in heaven die with a hope and peace that is remarkably different and more hopeful than those who die without that confidence.

Because of the Bible, which I believe and the experience of watching people die with such a hope, I have great confidence in my personal resurrection through the power of Jesus Christ.

I enjoy holding such confidence in the hope of an eternal resurrection and heaven.

What gives you your hope of an eternal resurrection and heaven?

God bless you,

Trade In

Most of us have traded in an older car for a newer or even a new one. Our death and spiritual resurrection with Jesus Christ is just a super natural trade in process.

While I can say that I don't understand it all, I do know that we do recieve a new body with a supernatural reality. Frankly, I am up for that. As I grow older I am getting more aches and pains and it makes me think more about heaven, new body and eternity with Christ.

In fact, I think that was a great plan to design us this way. If our body was always perfect, then we would not be so interested in heaven and a new body.

Make sure you have your "trade in" plans in place!

God bless you,
PJ

Get Up!

Get up! That is what Jesus did after three days in the grave. He got up and lived again. His resurrection is the demonstration of His power over sin, Satan and death.

The resurrection is what sets Christianity above every other religious system. No other religious leader can make the claim. And, that Truth, is what gives us hope. Since Jesus rose from the dead, we have the promise of resurrection and heaven. He did it, we can do it through His power. That is how we get heaven and that is why death, here on earth, is not so overwhelming.

This is the Easter season... thank you Jesus for rising from the dead and winning victory over sin, Satan and death.

Go read about the evidence of Jesus' resurrection... it is inspiring!

God bless you,
PJ

Death

This is a subject that most people feel uncomfortable addressing, either personally or with or about friends and family. Death is something that is in store for each of us and we need to be ready for it, we are going to do it.

One of the things I have learned is, we are generally more willing to talk about it when someone close to us has died.

Many people today want to discuss the reality of life after death. Bottom line, God declares there is an eternal life. We need to be ready for heaven or we will get hell! I choose heaven. I am taking God's Word, from the Bible, as the foundation of my Truth (Biblical Worldview).

I believe in heaven and believe God's Word for how to get there. Consequently, I choose to follow God's word and live my life in accordance to God's word so that I can have the promise of heaven... not hell.

Are you ready for heaven?
God bless you,

Cross

When I watched the movie: The Passion of Christ, I was astonished at the graphic depiction of the horrific crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The realization of Jesus dying on the cross was very impacting. That movie was as significant as anything I have experienced to help me grasp the impact of Christ on the cross and what He did for me.

Now, more than ever, I am captured by my need to take up my cross type burdens and follow Jesus, no matter how challenging the process. If Jesus can sacrifice for me on the cross, then I can do the same for him. What do you need to sacrifice for Jesus?

"Thank you Jesus for going to the cross and paying the price for my sins. You are amazing! Help me to be as sacrificial for you!"

God bless you,
Pastor Joe

Remember

I don't know about you, but, I remember eventful situations much more than uneventful situations. For example, I remember where I was when the twin towers of New York were destroyed. I was visiting at St. John's hospital in Tulsa Oklahoma. I remember where I was in the third grade when I heard about President Kennedy being shot and killed. We remember special events and occasions much more readily.

Each of us need to have special, even eventful, encounters with God and we will remember them and Him more vividly.

I remember a time a prayed for a woman and she was healed. Wow, I will never forget God's wonderful presence and power that healded that woman. I will never forget having a supernatural encounter with God's Holy Spirit at night one time. It made God undeniably real. I remember having Bible reading times where it has been like the Holy Spirit spoke to me audibly, saying, "that verse is for you."

If we have never had an eventful type experience with God, then it is harder to remember Him and hold the memories for our daily encouragement. Because of my eventful encounters with God, I cannot forget Him. Remembering Him and His presence helps me stay faithful!

What helps you remember God?
God bless you,
PJ

Rarely

Rarely do we see true servant leaders! Jesus did it! Who else can you name?

Jesus was really clear... "whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant." (Matthew 20:26) Wow, did Jesus ever seem to have that wrong for this day and age. But the Bible says that Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. So His principles must be right! Servant Leaders!

How will you lead this week? As a servant or as a... well I guess you get the idea!

How about leading your wife? Your kids? Your neighbor? Your co-workers?

Recently there were dirty dishes in the office sink and none of them were mine. I felt that God prompted me to wash them. I had a twinge of "you don't have to do that, you're the pastor and besides none of the dishes are yours." And then God spoke a bit more boldly and I led more like Jesus would do it.

God lead someone!

God bless you,

PJ

Motivation

When I reflect on this devo, I think of motivating my family to follow Jesus Christ. There is a difference between making someone do something and motivating them to do something. I desire to motivate my family to service God. My dear wife, sons and wives and grandchildren.

Motivation almost always includes inspiration. There needs to be something happening in me that is inspiring. People are generally motivated by something inspiring, convicting and worth living and dying for.

Believe with all your heart, soul and mind... never give up. That is motivating!

Who has motivated you to be more Godly, more faithful, more committed, and more dependable?

Get motivated!

Rash in the nation

The title words sound like "rationalization". We are a nation of people who rationalize our sinful behavior.

It is vital for us to grasp the reality that "sin is sin"! I won't be able to rationalize myself out of my sins and into heaven. Jesus will judge me and he knows the real nature of my actions.

I am going to choose to be honorable in my behavior and not rationalize sin!

Remember some of the things we say....
..no one will know.
..no one will get hurt.
..it is no big deal.
..everybody is doing it.
..I deserve it.
..Jesus will forgive me.

Be careful!

Lead by Example

We learned from the example of Christ a couple of days ago. Now we are being called to be that example for others.

I started drinking coffee by following an example. In my first pastoral assignment some of the men of the church would go to a little cafe in downtown Brookings and they invited me. They drank coffee, offered me coffee and, by their example, I ventured into coffee drinking. Good grief, it didn't even taste good. But their example and friendship made a connection. Now I am a coffee drinker!

That may be a very simple illustration, but our example has an impact of some kind. What kind of example are you living?

Does your family, friends, etc... see you living a Christ like life? Does your example come from a Godly heart? While we must be very careful that we don't live to be a "show-off", we must live a sincere Christian life to be an example (witness) for Christ.

God bless you,
PJ

You do it!

I grew up thinking that I was supposed to do it all myself. I have a struggle with allowing other people to do things for me. God is teaching me to delegate for the purpose of helping others be fulfilled and helping me get God's work done.

God knows that we need each other and I need to delegate in order to do better for God. It is God's idea that we each help one another. I simply need to do a better job of involving more people.

Do you find it difficult to delegate?

God bless you,
PJ

good and bad Example

Each of us are an example, it is just a matter of deciding what kind of an example we will be. Many years ago I watched our second son pick up the cat and toss it outside with all the fervor of His father. I realized I had set the example.

I am amazed at how, we in the christian church, has embraced so many of the patterns of the world. Most of it by following someone's example. I am personally challenged to follow Christ's example and try to set that pattern as an example in my family, with my friends, in the community and in the church.

I want my example to be Christlike, but I must know Christ very well before I can be a Christlike example. I do that by reading God's word, reading devos like the book we are reading, watching Godly men and consciously choosing to follow the Christ example.

Be careful, you are an example. Watch your words, reactions, temper, jokes, etc... you are setting an example.

God bless you,
PJ

I Can't Decide!

My dad used to say to me, "indecision is a decision!" I have discovered that most of the time, that saying seems to be true. I am trying to know the Word of God well enough that my decision making process is dominated by Biblical thinking. That is what we might refer to as a "Biblical Worldview".

I carry a personal conviction that every decision needs to be made from a Biblical mindset and I am trying to be in the Bible so often that it is my first thought response. That requires that I read it and other writers who write from a Biblical mindset.

What goes in, comes out. Good decisions come from good information.
I highly value the Proverbs 3:5-6 passage of scripture.

You are a character!

I have heard people say; "You are a character!" While it was meant to emphasize some unique element of the persons personality, it can be said of each of us. We are a character! It is just an issue of what kind of character. Our character is often revealed most when no one is watching. What do you think, do, say, etc... when no one but you (and God of course)are watching.

Character is the heart of who we really are! How is your character? What does it look like? What does it sound like? Where does it take you?

Your character counts!

God bless you,
PJ

Change

Colossians 3:7-11 (NLT)
7 You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world.
8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.
9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
11 In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

The scripture is clear, if we are in Christ, the power of Christ changes us to become more Christlike! This devo today and the scripture passage reminds me to let Christ really take control by His Holy Spirit and allow Him to change me.

I am consciously choosing to make Christ first and allow Him to change me to become more Christlike.

God bless you,
PJ

What inspires you?

I am inspired by hearing stories of God's mighty power and presence at work. I am inspired by people who are faithful not particularly famous. I am inspired by people who are persistent when everyone else wants to quit. I am inspired by BIG dreams that are backed by faith, when it looks impossible. I want to have God work in me to be faithful in good times and bad times. I want to be inspirational because I have God living in me.

What inspires you? Where do you get your inspiration?

God bless you,
PJ

Leadership

A friend of mine, a few years ago, gave me a plaque that says: "I must hurry, there go my people and i am their leader." Too often we think that leadership is position. Actually leadership is influence! Everybody is a leader of some influence. I want to be a leader of Godly influence. Who are you influencing? You are a leader! Are you influencing someone with Godly values? Be a leader in your home, with you family on your job, in your community and at your church. Influence people with Godly values and action.

God bless you,
PJ

Where have all the leaders gone?

I really like the phrase out of the devo... Godly leaders...are known by their actions and knowledge of God's Word. I want to be a leader with the qualities the writers of the devo identify.

I think we need to remember to use God's Word as a standard for leadership quality, not necessarily our societies view of leaders. Many of our political leaders seem to void of Godly leadership. Maybe that is a big part of our national failure. We have lost true leadership.

Jesus said that whoever wants to be great will be servant of all. God's view of leadership is most important to me.

"God help me to keep my eye on your standard and not be confused by the worldly standard of leadership."

Where do you look for leadership examples?

God bless you,
PJ

Ambition

Yesterday, today and tomorrow we take a look at Ambition! There are several key thoughts I want to reemphasize;
First...Ambition is good when it is directed not at the size of an accomplishment but at the quality of your character. So, what do you have ambition to do that will improve your character for the glory of God?
Second...Ambition is bad when it focuses more on our personal gain than on God's Kingdom. Ask, who gets the greatest gain out of this?
And in looking at tomorrow... what happens if you succeed at your dream and nobody knows you are the one who did it? Is that OK with you?

Make sure that your number one ambition is to know God and serve Him with your whole heart, soul, mind and strength. God can see our heart... He knows our intent. What do you want to do for God and His glory?

Dream a great dream for the glory of God
Determine that you will do it for the glory of God
Discipline yourself to take action for the glory of God

When some great happens... give God the glory!

God bless you,
PJ

Hide and Seek

My little granddaughter loves to play "hide and seek." Today we read about hiding our sin from God. The difference between the game I play with my granddaughter and the game we play with God is that she wants to be found and when we hide our sin from God, we don't want to be found out.

It is essential for each of us to remember that God knows anyway... no matter what we do, God knows. While there may be some person who doesn't know, God knows.

I want to live in a way that God can watch and say; "Well done!"

No hide and seek with God... He knows where we are hiding and He knows what we did!

God bless you,
PJ

Money Talks

Wow, it has been too long. We have had company and I have missed some devo's and blogging. Sorry!

Most of us have heard someone say, "Money Talks" and it seems that most of us have an ear to the language of money and wealth. However, we can listen to it and it can lead us wrong. Allow me to remind us of the great Bible verse that helps us gain the right perspective on money and wealth; "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:10

When we love money more than God and His purpose and plan... it is going to lead to problems. But when we love God and allow money to be a blessing to use for God's purpose and plan... then we can be in the will of God.

God desires for some of His people to be abundantly blessed so they will use the blessings to advance His Kingdom, purpose and plan. When you come into a time of relative wealth or blessing, do you think first about using it for yourself or are you content with what you have? Do you think about self consumption or blessing someone else?

God is OK with wealth... He is wealthy! God doesn't want our wealth to control us, He wants to control us. Should we seek wealth? We should seek God, Godly principles, Godly work ethic, Godly values and if those bring us wealth, we should remember it is because of God and not us.

If you have ever thought, "I would be generous if I were wealthy!" Stop and ask yourself, "Am I generous now!"

God bless you,
PJ

I did it again!

We returned to the subject of failure again, just like we have a tendency to fail again. I greatly appreciate the statement in the devo; "failure is not fatal." Praise God for His forgiving grace. However, there is a danger of not taking the consequences of our failures serious. Failures can be forgiven, but they may leave us wounded, scarred, broken, marginalized, distanced from friends and or family. Each of us needs to be careful to guard our heart, soul and mind and stay as focused as possible on the faith walk with God. Failures may be forgiven, but they can really hurt.

Take a special account of your life. Often you can see failure coming like a head on collision. Take note and get back in your lane... miss the failure and stay faithful. Make the changes necessary to get back in the right lane of living with God, family, friends and your church. The Holy Spirit is guiding you, telling you what to do... do it now and avoid a failure!

If you have failed... tomorrow we learn about succeeding after failures.

God bless you

Oops!

Have you ever heard someone say, "Oops, my bad!" when they mess up, fail, sin, etc? Well, I am very grateful to a God who understands and forgives our failures. One of the biggest things for us to learn is that we need to get up and try again when we fail. God knows about our weaknesses and He desires for us to keep trying. Frankly, I am convinced that our own disappointment about our failure causes us to stop more than anything. We begin to think we are losers, failures and incapable of succeeding. It is time we get up and try again and again, remembering when we quit, we fail. When we keep on trying we succeed (spiritually, personally, family, vocationally, etc...).

My friend John Maxwell wrote a book entitled; Failing Forward, and in it he commends us to use our failures to learn and become better to move forward. That can be applied to our sin struggles or our silly struggles.

Don't let your failures cause you to quit. Give your failures to God. God forgives... we should forgive ourselves and keep on trying.

God bless you,
PJ

How many times?

Some have said, it was the custom of the Jewish people to offer to forgive 3 times and Peter offers to double it and add one, thus, 7 times. When Jesus said, "seventy times seven" it was as if he had said a million or more times. It blew the listeners out of their comfort zone. It also gave us an idea about God's attitude toward forgiveness.

God forgives endlessly because He loves us that way. Since I am not perfect, I am very grateful for His unfailing love and forgiveness. Today, remember how much and many times God has forgiven you, yes, remember all the little things and all the big things... God forgives. Keep seeking His forgiveness and continue to live and love in an attitude of forgiveness. That is true Christlike living.

God bless you,
PJ
